What is a toothless jaw

A edentulous jaw is an oral condition in which a person has lost most or all of their teeth. More and more people around the world are experiencing this problem. It can be caused by dental disease, trauma and genetic factors. Perhaps the most common causes of tooth loss are systemic diseases and inadequate oral care – when the necessary skills are not developed in childhood, it is often impossible to save the teeth afterwards. Although older people are more likely to have lost all or most of their teeth, people in their thirties are also affected.

However, it is important to understand that a toothless jaw is a treatable condition and there are various options to restore the aesthetic appearance of the smile and chewing function. Modern dentistry offers a highly reliable and durable method – restoration of the jaw with implants – which not only restores the aesthetic appearance and chewing function, but also increases a person’s self-confidence and significantly improves their quality of life.

At Dantų meistrai dental clinic, before the implants are threaded, the surface of the implants is activated using a special device that creates a vacuum and triggers a laser current (plasma). The use of plasma significantly improves the efficiency and speed of implant osseointegration (growing into the bone).

Implant options for restoring the edentulous jaw

Removable denture fixed on 2-4 implants

Most or all of the lost teeth can be restored with a removable denture, fixed on 2-4 supportive titanium implants. This makes the removable denture more stable, with less movement during biting or chewing, and therefore better chewing function (up to 50%). The removability of the denture makes it easy to clean.

The upper jaw plates are quite stable, while the lower jaw plates are usually very uncomfortable when they are removed. In this case, only the lower jaw can be restored with an implant-supported prosthesis.

The main advantage of this method is its relatively economical price – from €1,600 per jaw. This method of prosthetics can be covered by the reimbursement of the TLK. However, this method of restoring teeth still causes some movement of the denture, food gets underneath it when eating, the supporting elastics need to be replaced every year, and the denture itself needs to be replaced every 5-10 years as it wears out. The good news is that the new denture is fixed on the same implants.

Fixing a non-removable denture on 4-6 implants

The most effective way of restoring most or all of the lost teeth is to fix a removable denture on 4-6 implants. The number of implants needed depends on the patient’s jaw size, muscle strength, bone volume and other factors, so it is always individually selected. An implant-retained, non-removable temporary denture can be fabricated within 24 hours. So, the very next day, the patient walks out with a new, comfortable, highly aesthetic, non-removable tooth, with which he or she can speak, laugh and chew food without any hesitation. After 12-48 months, the temporary denture is replaced with a permanent one.

Restoring teeth using this method not only restores 100% of the chewing function, but also ensures a very natural aesthetic appearance, longevity and maximum comfort. Patients who have chosen this method of restoring their teeth say that they feel as if they have their own teeth with the implant-supported dentures.

Implant-supported dentures are probably the only option for people with a sensitive palate or tongue. These people usually cannot wear removable dentures because they feel very nauseous when they touch the root of the tongue or the palate, and fixed dentures help to prevent this.

For patients who choose implant-supported prosthetics and meet certain conditions, the cost of prosthetics can also be partially reimbursed by the PSDF budget.

How to restore all your teeth in 24 hours

Restoring teeth within 24 hours consists of two stages.

The first stage is a consultation with the dentist (not included in the restoration time).

During the consultation, the patient’s oral clinical condition is assessed, expectations and preferences are discussed, oral and facial photographs are taken, panoramic and 3D X-rays are taken if necessary, and intraoral scans of the teeth are taken or alginate impressions are taken. After careful analysis, the most appropriate method of restoring the patient’s teeth is selected aesthetically, functionally and financially. The timing of the implant procedure is also coordinated. Usually, after the consultation, the implant placement is scheduled within 1-3 weeks.

At the next visit, the patient is threaded with the required number of implants under local anaesthesia. If necessary, tooth extraction, bone grafting or gum augmentation can be performed at the same visit. Once the implants are threaded in, an impression of the mouth is taken from the dental implants, which is then used by the dental technician to make a temporary or permanent prosthesis. It takes up to 24 hours to produce the denture, so the next day it is attached to the dental implants and the patient can enjoy a beautiful smile, restored chewing function, increased self-confidence and a noticeable improvement in their quality of life.

It is often assumed that restoring teeth within 24 hours is much more expensive than traditional dentistry. However, in many cases it is even cheaper because everything is done in one procedure. Implants are usually threaded where there is a sufficient amount of bone, so there is usually no need for bone grafting. For this reason, the patient also experiences less discomfort.

What to expect and how to enjoy the result for as long as possible

After restoring your teeth with implant-supported dentures, you will once again be able to communicate, laugh and eat without discomfort, your digestive problems will disappear, you will feel more self-confident and your overall health and quality of life will improve.

However, it is important to remember that restored teeth, like natural teeth, erode and wear over time. If your teeth are properly cared for, cleaned and professionally cleaned regularly, they are likely to last a long time. Annual preventive visits to the dentist are also very important, as it is much easier to resolve any oral health problems and prevent their progression when they are just beginning than when they are already advanced.

If a patient has been missing teeth for a long period of time, as a result of the deterioration of the mandibular bone (less than 12 mm) and the failure of the plates to adhere to the plates, he or she may be eligible for an increased amount of compensation for dentures (around €2 000).
