Oral surgery

Oral surgery is a branch of dentistry that involves the surgical treatment of the teeth and oral tissues. Although surgical treatment is a source of fear and anxiety for many people, modern surgical methods, high-quality materials and the professionalism of doctors who are constantly upgrading their skills make it possible to ensure painless procedures with maximum comfort, a smooth healing period and an effective solution to even the most difficult problems.

How oral surgery is performed

When planning surgical treatment, the consultation includes the necessary examinations, an accurate assessment of the patient’s oral health, and an accurate treatment plan.

Surgical procedures are usually performed under local anesthesia, but sedation may be used for patients with extreme fear or anxiety, as well as for larger procedures.

Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) therapy may be used during surgery. Fibrin, extracted from the patient’s blood, stops bleeding, stimulates bone and soft tissue regeneration, the formation of new cells and reduces the risk of inflammation and complications. At the end of the surgical procedure, the operated area is covered with several layers of PRF before the operated tissues are sutured.

After the procedure, the doctor who performed the procedure makes recommendations to help reduce post-procedure discomfort and ensure faster and smoother healing.

The most common oral surgery procedures

Oral surgeons perform tooth extractions, jawbone augmentation, sinus floor elevation, gum recession treatment, tooth root apex resections, removal of jaw cysts and benign soft tissue formations, and other oral surgical procedures. Oral surgery is often used for dental implants and dentures.

  • Surgical removal of mental teeth. Removal of mental teeth is necessary when they do not provide a chewing function, are difficult to clean properly, and threaten the health of nearby teeth. Thinned (underdeveloped) teeth are also removed. Tooth extraction is usually carried out under local anesthesia.
  • Jaw bone augmentation. Bone grafting is most often needed when a tooth restoration is requested long after it has been lost. The bone is augmented using the patient’s own bone tissue or a bone substitute. Once the required amount of bone has been restored, the implant can be placed reliably and ensure a long-lasting result.
  • Sinus floor elevation. This procedure is performed on patients who do not have enough bone in the maxilla at the sinus site to thread dental implants. The sinus floor lift procedure is most often required in preparation for the restoration of missing upper molars or premolars. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. An incision is made in the gums to access the jawbone in the required area, then the sinus mucosa is lifted and the required amount of bone is brought in.
  • Resection of the root apex of the tooth. This surgical procedure is used in cases where the infected tooth root apex cannot be reached endodontically (through the root canal). It involves cleaning the infection foci, cutting and sealing the root apex of the inflamed tooth. Resection of the tooth root prevents the spread of infection and helps to preserve the tooth and its functionality.
  • Cyst removal. Jaw cysts are usually formed as a result of a chronic infection of the roots of the teeth as a consequence of chronic periodontitis. In the soft tissues of the mouth, cysts are formed as a result of various inflammatory processes, which can be caused by chronic trauma to the mucous membranes, in the presence of a poor-quality denture and other factors. Cysts may also result from trauma, immunodeficiency, diabetes mellitus or comorbidities related to gastrointestinal pathology. Cysts can only be removed surgically. To avoid complications, it is also necessary to address the causes of the cysts, such as root canal treatment, removal of severely decayed roots or bone.

What result to expect

Surgical treatment prevents possible complications and ensures good oral health. If bleeding, swelling or pain occurs in the first few days, you can use the prescribed medication and it is important to follow other instructions from your doctor.

It is also advisable to avoid hot food and drinks, solid products and mouthwash during the post-procedure period. Once the temporary discomfort has passed, you can enjoy the aesthetics and functionality of your smile again!

If you have problems that only oral surgery can solve, we invite you to contact the “Dantų meistrai” dental clinic. After assessing your condition, we will carry out safe and comfortable procedures without any unpleasant sensations.
